I chose this painting by Walter Ellison because i think it illustrates Countee Cullen's poem Incident very well. To me, the poem paints an image of two oblivious children blissfully unaware of the racial division present. The children are not normal in society because the society is divided. I feel this painting illustrates the poem well because in it we can see the literally and racially division between the black and white passengers. The black passengers seemed surprised and against this unity. The Also in the painting we can see two children that seem interested in the train station and unaware the the division around them. They are in very similar posses which to me suggests a unity between the two. The black passengers seemed surprised and against this unity. This painting also represents the poem Incident to me because I can see the black man in the white section representing the child in the poem that is merely having a good time in baltimore and has forgotten about the racial divisions that surround him. I can than see the girl pointing out as the child that shouts "nigger". In the painting the child seems alarmed by his presence and is trying to bring him back down to earth and face to face with the reality of the separations of the two races.
